I have a 1972 travel trailer with a Murphy-Richards Astral refrigerator. I think it just needs recharging. Is this something I can do myself? Where in Northern California can I take it if I can't and how much do I expect it to cost? Or can I just replace it with one made by a company still in business?
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RECHARGE IT
your refrigerator has amponia in it---
first off is there any yellow pawder on the back side bottom- if so it's GONE
some older units the 115 element might be burned out-(replaceable) if it wont get cold on gas--the amonia might have leaked out-
some units can to turned upside down 24 hours---back upright 12 hours---and plugged in---or back on gas--and they will work--(called burping) see rv maintenance and repair manual---

Hi Misskim, On a fridge that old I personally would go with a new fridge. If you need a cooling unit you may have a hard time finding a company that still rebuilds the Astrals, plus parts availability.... Measure the outside casing and go to Thetford.com for Norcold or Dometic.com and you'll find a conversion chart with the current model measurements. You can also try rich's suggestions first, can't hurt. Good luck!
