1986/7 ford e350 leisurecraft rv broken exhaust stud!! rick blake 2-11-09
Hi got 3 sheared off exhaust manifold studs or bolts on my 1986/7 7.5l ford E350 econoline petrol (carb)& lpgas V8 engine in leisurecraft motorhome.
Rear two on right side and rear one on left side looking forward from inside cab. Anyone know if I can replace without removing head? If so any ideas how or can I just leave it as when warm appears to be no leaks. I am in the UK so not much experience over here with this one I am afraid.

Also anyone got a good feel for mpg on petrol and or autogas

many thanks

rick blake

Hello Rick
if you can get to them---start very small drill bit---straight on---to what angle they might be---I wouldn't go larger than 1/4-" and try a easy out-- keep using some sort of penetrating oil on it---night tap on it---see if it will break loose---and easy out will remove them---i don't actually have bolt size---but probable either 5/16 x 18 thread or 3/8 x 16 thread.once out---retap thread---using (anti sees) before putting new bolt back in.

If the exhaust is not leaking, you are lucky, especially on the righht rear, that is been the most troublesome on my 1989 with 7.5 L. I had to remove the manifold, and used an angle air grinder, with drill bits shortened to drill them out. As you have noticed. space is an issue here. started with 1/8 then 1/4 inch bits, was able to rework them after that. Welcome to the 7.5 l club.
As far as mileage, my 23 foot Class C gives about 11 to 12 miles to Imperial gallon, a little bit better if you really really baby it
Good Luck

What all do i have to remove to gain access to the mechanical fuel pump on the engine? does it have an electric pump in the tank? If you really want to improve your Gas mileage. Remove all of the emission crap. Pump/pumps, hoses etc. You only need 4 vacuum lines. one for the pcv, one for the vacuum advance on the distributer, one for the power brake booster, and one to feed dash board vacuum controls. Replace carb with pre smog unit or have someone revamp yours to earlier specs. Or better yet change to after market carter/edelbrock a.f.b. Tune it up using 68/69 specs. Convert to dual exaust,[manifolds have to come off any way] install headders, use turbo mufflers and turn the pipes out the side. If you don't want to hear the rumble run them all the way out the back. If you keep your foot out of it These changes gave me 15/16 mpg around town and 20 average at 60/70 mph highway. oh ya and it will smoke the duallys right off the rims. I really don't recommend doing that as about the 3rd time I did it I twisted the drive shaft right off the rear end.

Oops i forgot 1 vacuum line. the modulator line to the auto trans. so you actually need 5. If you want to take it a bit further install a overdrive unit in your driveline [expensive] big increase in fuel economy. my next project will be the overdrive unit and a 5spd top loader standard trans change. OH YA, DO THE EMISSION CRAP REMOVAL AT YOUR OWN RISK AS BIG BROTHER FROWNS ON THAT KIND OF THING. I CAN'T SEE HOW SOMETHING THAT INCREASES YOUR FUEL ECONOMY BY SUCH A LARGE MARGIN AND REDUCES THE EMISIONS COULD POSSIBLY BE ILLEGAL?
