I was driving down the road with hubs locked but not switched into 4 wheel. There was a loud bang from the back of the truck and I pulled over. Looked around, engine fine, unlocked hubs and continued. Later had to get up my driveway and locked hubs and 4 wheel wouldn't engage. Any help on what the problem might be is appreciated.
There shouldn't be anything that you can break driving with the hubs locked, but that bang noise bothers me. It may or may not be related, since you didn't hear any noise once the hubs were re-engaged.
The transfer case actuator motor is easy enough to unbolt from the transfer case, so I'd start there and unbolt it so you can see if it moves when you use the buttons or selector knob to engage 4WD. It's very common for these to fail with no warning. Depending on the year of your truck, you might have an issue with the 4WD controller or GEM.
Thanks for responding....finally got the truck up my driveway and home. If I unbolt the motor, can I check it myself or do I need someone else in the truck. Is it obvious looking at the motor if it turns. I do my own mechanics, but never worked on 4wd before. Any help in how and what order is appreciated...Thanks in advance
