1990 Ranger 4wd A4ld transmission. Is there a "lock up solenoid" that is electonically controlled? Or does the Converter mechanically lock itself up?
Shifts into Reverse fine, Shifts into
all 4 forward gears just fine.
Problem: It won't lock up when I ease
off the throttle. Normally when it shifts
into 4th gear and i cruise the rpm will
drop 500rpm and lock up the converter. Now it justs won't lock up and when i give
it gas it jumps up rpm about 500rpm. Before if i gave it gas while highway cruising it would hold steady rpm and increase gradually according to speed increase just like a standard trans would.
Before in 3rd (if i gear shift selected ) or 4th with neutral throttle it would drop 500 rpm and i would feel the lock up.
Sam, there is an electronically controlled solenoid that locks up the torque converter. It *IS* normal for the torque converter to unlock when accelerating, but the converter should lock right back up when lifting off the throttle (within a second or 2).
Low trans fluid can cause this problem, old trans fluid can cause this problem and anything that would cause a line pressure drop would cause this (dented trans cooler tube or plumbing or a clog in the cooler, blocked filter, weak pressure releif spring in the pump, etc.)
