Tachometer hook up problem Doug Kerr 8-21-08
Hi, I have a 1994 Allegro with a Chev 454 V-8 HEI ignition. I am trying to install a Autogage 4 wire tach. I have a small coil with 5 leads coming out. The standard large black to top of distributor; two connectors with two wires each coming out of coil: one connector has a small red and a small white wire that plug into the side of the distributor and both measure the white one has 12v with ignition on and the red one only has 0.60v with ignition on and goes to 0.70+/- with motor on; the other connector has a small white wire going into a female terminal that is not connected to anything and measures 12v with ignition on; it is taped to a insulator around the larger red wire coming out of the same coil connection but doesn't connect to the distributor, it goes down but I don't know where to and I have not cut into it to measure voltage yet. If I am not to connect the green tach wire to a wire with dc voltage on it... where can I connect it to? Why is the large red wire covered by an insulator? This would have been much easier if I had one on those old style coils with just two small wires, I know. Can someone help?

Last time I messed with an HEI the cap and coil assembly was marked with lettering cast into the cover with the four wires functions. The were power, module and Tach. Good Luck
