I have a 96 Ford Exploere with a 4.0, 4x4. It will not pass smog due to the computer self test. It has been three months and the computer is still self testing itself..I already tried resetting the computer with a handheld scanner, unplugged the battery. drove over 1,000 miles(that was not cheap). Ford dealer wants to charge me 250.00 just to find the porblem with no guarantee they will find the problem. I was told by the smog tech that it might be a sensor going out????? But no codes are appearing on my scanner..please help..I'm tired of going to DMV...Thanks Tray
I've run into this exactly one time, but it was with an EEC5 vehicle.
Brand new 1995 1/2 Windstar. Drove down the road about 5 miles and came back on a flat bed. quick test with a code scanner got a bunch of error codes and a P9999. looked everything up in the shop manual and first line said to replace the fuel computer (ECM).
First thing I would check is that the diagnostic plug has power. The fuse for the diagnostic plug is the same as the cig lighter (or 12v outlet on the dash). You'll find it in your owner's manual. If that fuse is OK and the code scanner gives you an indication that test is underway and doesn't finish with a P1000 or P1001 code, your ECM is bad.
