Generac NP52G generator problem Rick 7-7-08
The generator has been running great till I tried to start it the other day. It just clicks and doesn't turn over. Like a starter that is locked up or something. Battery is full of charge so it's not that. The big red wire that goes to a soilenoid gets pretty hot when I try to start it. But the thing just clicks.

Anyone have any ideas? Soilenoid? Starter?

It might be a vapor lock-
I would remove the spark plug stand back and hit the starter (no choke or throttle needed). then- put the spark plug in give it a whirl. If it starts, it might have had fuel seep in the cylinder and cause a vapor lock.

Do not keep trying to start it if it will not turn over, you could burn out the starter's brushes.

Or, your solenoid on the starter could be gone. Also, check to make sure the electrical connections to the battery and the top of the starter are good, tight and corrosion free.

If this is it, try turning off the gas valve to it (if so equipped).

Please post your results.

Good luck.

Well I pulled the plugs and it wasn't that.
Just get a click when I push the start button.

Checked all the wires and they appear to be in good shape, tight no corrosion but went ahead and cleaned them with emory cloth and tightened them up.

Batteries are fully charged and I noticed when I hit the start switch for the generator the other lights (ceiling light that I had on) would dim out to almost nothing. Whatever it is it's putting a heavy strain on the batteries juice. The Battery is only a couple months old BTW.

So I assume that it has to be the starter or the starter solinoid. Can you tell me were they are located? If they are where I think they are (in back of generator)then that means pulling the unit out to get to them.

Please tell me there's an easy way to get to the starter.

I agree, it is probably the solonoid or starter.

I do not have specific knowledge of your generator, the help is only from knowing about small engines. I would post your question on another thread as it is kind of "burried" at this point.
Good luck.

Rick any luck getting your generator started? I am having the same issue with my NP52G, just clicking and will not turn over.

Did you have luck changing out the starter?
