Any help on how to replace a pump in an a4ld trans.? I replaced the trans and made the mistake of bolting the torgue converter to the fly wheel first and have been told that I probably broke the pump. Looking for info on how to repair this problem as simply as possible.
More than likely, you've broken the pump AND the torque converter, so both will need to be replaced.
The pump is right behind the torque converter; remove all the bolts around it and it should pull out (it may need a little "convincing" from a slide hammer, but this is entirely normal). Don't forget to replace the gasket that goes around the edge that the pump bolts to and the O-ring around the pump as well as the front seal that goes to the torque converter.
To keep the new parts from being damaged, once the pump is in make sure the torque converter is all the way in. You can do this by supporting the front of the converter and spinning it until you feel the internal splines slip together (the converter should slide a little further into the pump when everything lines up). You know you have it right when you put the trans back up into place: The bellhousing should touch the engine block and the converter should still spin easily.
