Kohler Confidant 4 genset Start Problem Charlie 7-1-08
I have a Kohler Confidant 4 in my Rv and was running it for about a hour or two....then shut it down to do some work on the batteries..I used the remote switch to stop it. Once I was done working on the batteries (25 minutes) I tried to start the genset and it just turned over like it was not getting any spark and or gas... finally after about 15 minutes of farting with it...it just fired right up! Very perplexing...could it have been vapor lock? Or maybe something to do with the remote switch? I just had the genset electronics and carb replaced....(dropped a ton of money in it) any insight would be great!! Thanks...
Charlie

(I'm not taking it to the mechanic I had it at quite yet since I had real issue with their service..)

This is small engine info- I have no specific knowledge of your generator-

Vapor locks will do exactly what they say- lock the engine so they do not even turn over with the starter. I just had one with my motorcycle last week. The engine will usually not turn over at all.
I wonder if your carb settings are too lean and it got too hot (engines will heat up higher right after to shut them off as the oil that help cool stops circulating when it stops running. this is just a guess.)

The way to tell is if it does it again, pull the plug, have the bottom of the plug touch the engine head (hands off of it or you will get shocked), put the top of the plug in the plug cap, have someone turn it over and look for spark at the gap. If it is sparking, then I would suspect a carb/fuel issue. If no spark I would suspect a issue maybe with the coil, remote start, kill switch, ignition switch, etc.

If you have spark- pour no more than 1/2 a teaspoon of gas in the spark plug hole before you put the plug back in, then replace the plug and connect he top and try to start it. If if starts then even for a few seconds, it is a fuel issue. Does it run very hot? If so maybe the carb settings are too lean (as I suggested above). Then, it will only re-start after it cools down a little (15 mins might do it).

Post your results please.

Since that one starting problem I have not had it happen since...although once it started a little hard. I did find that if I leave the outer door to the genset compartment open it seems to be ok...and the one time it gave me issues I was running it with the compartment door closed. I guess it may have ran hotter and caused the issue.

Thx
