Engine jingle Harold 6-21-08
I have an old 1960 GMC converted to a motorhome. It has a later model turbocharged 671 Detroit Diesel. It runs excellent, but the other day when we serviced it and ran it from the rear, as we shut it down we heard a jingle coming from the engine. As hard as we tried, we couldn't locate the jingle. A call to Penske gave us a heads up to maybe the turbo. It runs so excellent otherwise. The turbo looks like no fun to change. Also, it doesn't sound like it coming from the turbo. Has anybody ever worked on one of these?

First I would start with a heater hose or something like that. Have someone shut down the engine while you try to hear which side of the engine the noise is coming from. If something inside the engine came apart it could have put metal pieces in the turbo and they could be bouncing around in there. You could have a rattle that sounds like a jingle coming from the blower vanes rattling back and forth when the engine stops. Last but not least, you could have an air box cover that came loose and rattles when the flow of air isn't pushing it out. That engine should have cast aluminum covers on it, but if it was converted to a turbo model, the old stamped steel ones could be still on it.

It was tough to find, but there was a metal plate on the side of the engine that was loose. With the help of a 9/16 flex socket, we got it tight again and checked all the rest. Thanks, I really appreciate your help.

I hope you either checked for or replaced the gasket that goes under the cover.

Gasket? Ooooooooops, back to the drawing board. Glad you told me about it. I didn't even think of a gasket.
