I just bought a 1979 Coachman (454) it runs but diesels when its cut off. Instead of rebuilting the carb or working on the injectors I'm wanting to replace it with a new one and I plan to add a cold air intake. Is there a haynes type manual for RVs. On the engine and chasis would there be a 79 truck that has the exact engine that I could use to order parts? Thanks for any advice.
Ah, the diesling probably indicates a small external problem with the current carb, but OK. You can ask chev what chassis model you have based on the VIN or serial #. It will probably be a P30. The easiest way to get a direct replacement carb is to pull the air ceaner and get the carb #s off the stapings or tag. There are some realy sweet running aftermarket replacement carbs out there but you stock unit will be easiest to change. Unfortunatly the diesiling will probably continue unless the underlying problem is repaired. I would look first at the curb idle solinoid and the throtle stop screw. Many people adjust the throttle stop screw rather than the curb idle solinoid. This does not allow the throttle to drop to zero and prevent run on. Good Luck
