I would need more information- does it run, if so what does it do when you turn on the back defroster (if it has one).
This can tell you a lot Here is a test-
if it does run start it up and turn on the four way flashers first, and see how fast it flashes, then (keep on the flasher) and turn on the rear defroster (if it has one) and hit the brake lights on, if the flasher slows dramatically, I would suspect the alternator and or battery. This is a crude but quick way to check things without even having to open the hood. Depending on what it does, more tests can follow.
Email me and I can try to help you further with more information. These older cars are usually pretty easy to figure out ie, no computers.
The ALT light is a specific fail. It will only go on when the voltage regulator has grounded. The source of the ground could be the voltage regulator itself or it could be the alternator or it could be an open in the wiring to the voltage regulator.
Since this happens when you turn the lights on, you may have an issue with a fusable link at the starter solinoid.
