My 1997 Escort is leaking water from the floor pan out the leuvers. I was told by a mechanic that this was a result of a bad heater core. How do I bypass the heater core without causing damage to the motor or stop Air conditioning service. I live in AZ.

The heater hoses attach to the heater core thru the fire wall. If you remove the heater hoses where they meet the firewall and connect them together with a piece of copper pipe and some hose clamps, you will bypass the heater core altogether and not disturb anything else.

I don't recommend doing this, since the heater core gives another opportunity for the engine to get rid of heat (which you might find useful in a hot, desert environment like, say, Arizona). The air conditioning will still work, since you aren't disturbing that. This should be considered a patch until you replace the heater core.

Hope that helps!

Of course, a bad heater core will leak coolant, not water. If you have water leaking out and you have coolant, not water, in your engine then the vent tube for the A/C evaporator is blocked and the evaporator is filling up with water. A few minutes with a bamboo skewer will fix the problem once you find the vent tube at the bottom of the firewall.
